Welcome to The Writer Gene.com!
Not too long ago I decided to write a book about my creative writing process and the many experiences that I’ve had throughout my career. The inspiration behind it was pretty straightforward. I simply wanted to share what I’ve learned over the past 25+ years with other creative writers.
It didn’t take me long to realize however, that the book I was writing would only partially be about process. The other part would be about psychological survival. Ironically, what I learned from this little adventure was that the two things are really one in the same. Having a process that you can rely on is your lifeblood as a writer, and if you are going to have any hope of surviving in this profession that process needs to evolve and grow with you.
As a result, Live To Write Another Day, A Survival Guide for Screenwriters and Creative Storytellers, is essentially the beginning of a conversation that I hope to continue having with all my creative writer brethren out there. A conversation that has also made me think a great deal about how important it is for us to connect and help one another, and how these connections are as vital to our survival as the act of writing itself.
In the coming weeks and months I hope to use this website to facilitate these kinds of connections, to create an online community where creative writers can support each other by sharing their thoughts, their feelings, their ideas, and their own writing processes in ways that can benefit and enlighten novices and seasoned veterans alike.
Writing is such a solitary experience, but that doesn’t mean that each of us has to be in it alone. The truth is there are millions of us all across the globe that possess what I affectionately call the “writer gene.” And it’s this peculiar piece of DNA that not only compels us to to express ourselves in words day after day, but ultimately ties us all together.
